It all has to do with genes.  Below is a chart that gives you the possibility of what you will get.  Phenotype means what you actually see, Genotype means the genes that the bird has.

Phenotypes
Genotypes

Walnut
R_P_

Rose
R_pp

Pea
rrP_

Single
rrpp

So if one parent has a pea comb gene rrPp and another has the same rrPp, then using a Putnam square, you will get their kids to have a possibility of rrPP (25%) - PEA COMB, rrPp (50%) - STILL PEA COMB BUT CAN PRODUCE SINGLE IF CROSSED WITH SINGLE COMB OR ONE WITH THE SAME GENE MEANING (rrPp), and rrpp (25%) - SINGLE COMB.

In your case, at one point of that line (for each bird), there was a cross of a single comb in it's family line, which resulted in BOTH the birds still having that gene (rrPp), but it never coming out until they were crossed with another rrPp.  Hope this helps.
